Meal Time Assistant Job Description

1. Key purpose of the job

Is to help organise and prepare a healthy balanced diet for the children based within Watcombe Childrens Centre Nursery. To ensure the provision of healthy food is met whilst also adhering to children’s individual dietary needs. Working within appropriate food hygiene and health and safety legislation and guidance.

2 key duties

• To prepare the food area in the nursery and foundation unit i.e. ensuring tables are cleaned thoroughly, using appropriate table cloths, and laying the table with some of the older children, placing items of interest on the tables

• To ensure the food is divided into bowls for nursery children to serve themselves, under two’s to be served on plates.

• Keep a log of food temperatures in and when going out to the children

• Co-ordinate the serving of the food with other nursery staff whilst being aware of Childrens allergies.

• Follow daily cleaning duties and sign off. Clean up food area, kitchen and wash-up crockery, cutlery and utensils.

• To report any problems or concerns regarding children, staff or job role to the Nursery manager and adhere to confidentiality policy.

• Prepare tea

• Clear away morning snack.

• Prepare lunch trolley, with flannels, bowls, cups , plates, cutlery, jugs

• Liaise with the nursery manager to prepare balanced and healthy menus and display for the parents.

• Ensure all appropriate utensils are in place before cooking i.e. coloured chopping boards, food probe, plates, bowls, cutlery etc.

• Wear appropriate clothing provided by the company.

• Fill in daily records in Better Food, Safer Business folder. (Such as food temperatures, fridge temps and cleaning routine, diary etc).

• Ensure any foods used are sealed and dated with use by date

• Liaise with the food supplier with regards to children’s dietary needs, quality of food, quantities and review of the menu.

• Use appropriate cloths and mops (colour co-ordinated)

3 health and safety

• To implement all relevant health and safety policies at all times so that the highest standards of safety, security, hygiene and cleanliness are operated at all times within the nursery.

• Ensure that any faulty or potentially dangerous equipment is immediately removed or reported to the appropriate person including nursery manager.

• Risk asses any new tools, or situations as they arise and inform all staff

• Display wet sign boards

• Use stool to reach items on high shelves

4 key working relationships

External-relevant staff within health, and environmental health and local authority

Internal-Watcombe primary school and children centre staff.

A, all staff must commit to equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice.

B, we operate a smoke-free policy and the post holder is prohibited from smoking within the buildings or grounds on the Nursery site. Staff will not be released for a break that is specifically for smoking.

C the relevant post holder is expected to familiarise themselves with and adhere to all relevant polices and procedures.

D as this post meets the requirements in respect of exempted questions under the rehabilitation of offences act 1974, all applicants who are offered employment will be subject to a criminal record check (disclosure) from the criminal records bureau before appointment is confirmed. This will include details of ALL cautions, reprimands or final warnings as well as convictions whether spent or unspent. Criminal convictions will only be taken into account when they are relevant to the post.
